Role Overview: System Delivery Engineer (SRE-SD L1)
The System Delivery Engineer (SRE-SD L1) role sits within PhonePe’s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) – System Delivery team. This cross-functional team plays a crucial role in managing, scaling, and optimizing PhonePe’s production systems. The role requires building various infrastructure services and carrying out essential maintenance activities to ensure uninterrupted service for users nationwide.
This is an excellent opportunity for a tech enthusiast looking to contribute to a high-impact area within PhonePe. The SRE-SD L1 Engineer will work under the guidance of senior team members and follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for production system maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Building and Managing Distributed Systems:
- Develop and maintain various distributed systems, such as Galera, RabbitMQ (RMQ), Aerospike, and nGinx, supporting high availability and efficient performance.
- Vulnerability Management:
- Deploy operating system vulnerability fixes to ensure PhonePe’s production systems are secure and compliant with the latest security standards.
- Database Maintenance:
- Perform regular database maintenance to guarantee smooth functioning and stability of production environments.
- Proxy Configuration Management:
- Configure and roll out proxy settings to production systems, enhancing connectivity and load balancing.
- Production Infrastructure Management:
- Understand the significance of maintaining production infrastructure and work to ensure its reliability and scalability.
- On-Call Support and Shift Work:
- Be prepared to work in night shifts and participate in a rotational on-call schedule to provide 24/7 support.
- Task Automation:
- Automate various operational tasks as needed, reducing manual intervention and increasing system efficiency.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience:
- Minimum 1-3 years of hands-on experience with Linux or Unix system administration.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of database systems, content delivery networks (CDN) and proxies, virtualization, and basic networking concepts (DHCP, PXE, routing, gateway).
- Experience with automation or configuration management tools, like SaltStack or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with both private and public cloud environments.
- Communication:
- Good communication skills are essential for collaborating effectively with team members and stakeholders.
- Additional Skills (Preferred):
- Implementation of cloud services on Linux using KVM/QEMU.
- Working knowledge of databases like MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
- Experience with distributed data storage systems, such as Aerospike and Elasticsearch.
Work Location and Shift Requirements
- Location: Bangalore, India
- Shift Availability:
- This role requires rotational on-call shifts, covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring continuous system monitoring and support.
